Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation is situated in the central part of Kaunas, not far from the station. Maple and birch, poplar and linden trees surround the cathedral area and slowly move into the zone of the park. The park, which is located near the Cathedral of the Annunciation and - Resurrection Church, and was formerly the necropolis, where many Christians have found a place of repose.
The temple was built in 1932. After 3 years, it was consecrated. Cathedral, which arose near the Church of the Resurrection, built for some reason. Resurrection church with a bell tower were built in 1862 in a former Carmelite cemetery on the donations of parishioners. At first, the parish had a small, but after a while the number of believers has increased so much that they could hardly fit in the walls of the temple. At the beginning of the XX century when the temple existed a parish school, a Russian elementary school and high school, the brotherhood and sisterhood.
In 1918, after the adoption of Lithuania's independence, more than a dozen Orthodox churches of Kaunas was given to the new owners. Resurrection Church still could not accommodate everyone. Therefore, the Diocesan Council, it was decided to ask the government to return the Orthodox church of Peter and Paul, located on Laisves avenue. Small chapel of the cathedral has been dominated by the Uniates, Catholic services were held in a large altar. This cathedral was once the garrison. City officials did not return the cathedral, but offered to build next to the Church of the Resurrection church, the construction of which they have been allocated funds, and at the end of the construction work has been entirely restored iconostasis of the main altar of the cathedral.
In 1932, construction began on a new church. Allocation of funds was not enough for the construction of a new church, the Orthodox people sacrificed so, as far as possible, the means and some parishioners were directly involved in the construction of the cathedral.
Care of the flock of the new Cathedral of the Annunciation charged Mitred Archpriest Eustathius Kalisskomu, selfless work there until 1941. Archpriest Basil Nedvetsky was the second priest.
In 1923, during the occupation of the Vilnius region Poland, Metropolitan Eleutherius (Epiphany) was offered to head of the diocese of Vilnius and Lithuania, which is in the range of independent Lithuania. Annunciation Cathedral, built in the Vladimir-Suzdal style with five domes topped with gold crosses. The building was built of brick gray. West facade of the building is decorated with a porch with columns and three entrances to the temple. Inside the cathedral arches supported by four columns. The altar area - two thrones: the main altar, consecrated in honor of the Annunciation, and the right side chapel, consecrated in honor of Saints Vilna Martyrs Anthony, John and Eustathius.
Revered shrines of the cathedral is the miraculous icon of the Mother of God Surdegskoy. To her prays not only Orthodox in Lithuania, but also the faithful who come from abroad. Few realize that the church is an icon with the relics of St. Euphrosyne of Polotsk.
