Arc de Triomphe - one of the most famous sights of Innsbruck. The arch at the southern end of the street Maria Theresa, in the place where he once housed the southern gate of the city.
The Arc de Triomphe was built in 1765 on the occasion of the marriage of Archduke Leopold (son of Empress Maria Second Theresa) with the Spanish princess Maria. During the wedding ceremony the husband of the Empress died suddenly - Franz Stephan. On the south side of the arch displays motifs dedicated to the wedding of a young couple, and the north side symbolizes the mourning for the deceased emperor.
In those days, many cities were built to mark the triumphal arches of various landmark events. Most arches were built of wood, but the arch in Innsbruck was built of stones. Moreover, the stones were used for the second time - they were taken from the destroyed gate, standing before on this very spot. It is because of this decision, the Arc de Triomphe in Innsbruck preserved to this day.
Construction was carried out under the direction of architect Konstantin Walter, stucco engaged Johann Baptist Haguenauer. V1774, the moldings were replaced with marble copies made by Balthasar Ferdinand Moll.
Reliefs arch show the symbols of the Habsburg monarchy, as well as people associated with the event of marriage of the Archduke: Austrian Archduke, the profile of the newlyweds, the Empress Maria Theresa with her husband with a laurel wreath, a portrait of the Duchess Charlotte of Lorraine and Duke Charles of Lorraine.
