Ibn Danan Synagogue, located in Fez, - one of the historical sites of the city of Fez. The synagogue was built in the mid XVII century. in the heart of the Jewish quarter Mell, that Arabic is translated as "salt." This quarter, surrounded by a huge wall was very different from other quarters of Fez, as the windows of Jewish homes in contrast to the others, out on the street rather than the courtyard. Mella became the first Jewish quarter in Morocco and located within walking distance from the sultan's palace.
In 1999, Ibn Danan synagogue has undergone major restoration work. This is one of the most modest buildings in the quarter Mella. Outwardly, it looks like an ordinary residential building with a simple door and windows positioned high on the walls. At the entrance to the synagogue doorpost on the right you can see a mezuzah. Earlier, the synagogue belonged to the family of Ben Danan - natives of Sephardim.
Under the main prayer room is a mikvah, which runs all the rainwater. The tank has a depth of about six meters, allowing to plunge into the water with his head. Visitors can walk down to the mikvah to examine it more closely.
To date, no one synagogue in a quarter Mell, including Ibn Danan, are not used for its intended purpose, as this quarter is almost no Jewish population. But despite this, many of the synagogue, including the Ibn Danan, are protected by the local government and have been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. In 2011, Ibn Danan synagogue visited by Prince Charles.
