Bayenturm Tower is among the fortifications of Cologne, in the Middle Ages, it served as the city wall. Everyone can find an impressive building on the banks of the Rhine river near the waterfront called rheinauhafen.
The dimensions of the tower can not leave indifferent even the skeptic: a two-storey octagonal structure formed on the basis of the square of the three floors. Having a wall thickness of 2, 5 meters and a height of about 35 meters, the tower copes with its protective and defensive functions, giving residents of the city of mind.
Bayenturm Tower was built in 1220. After a few decades, it has gone through a difficult test, in 1262 it stormed the citizens of the city who had rebelled against the government at the time of Archbishop Engelbert II. Capturing such a majestic tower has become one of the most important steps on the path of liberation of the city. Already in 1288 the long-awaited Cologne gained independence, and the residence of the archbishop was moved to Bonn. In memory of these historic events the inhabitants of the city decided to decorate the coat of arms of the tower.
Despite the fact that for centuries were demolished numerous city walls, Bayenturm survived and preserved its original outline to date. Restoration in the late XIX century, engaged the architect Josef Shtyubben, which eliminated any damage tower, including those obtained during the fire, which occurred in 1697.
Since 1907, the museum hosted Bayenturme early history of Cologne, but during the war most of the exhibits were destroyed, and the tower itself has suffered greatly. It was restored only in 1987, based on the figures of 1895, remaining from Shtyubbena.
