Amphitheatre, spread out on a hillside Göktepe, was built in the IV century BC when Mausolus and can accommodate about 13 thousand spectators. In 1973, after the amphitheater on the territory of the archaeological site, it was turned into an open air museum. Most recently, the company "Turkcell" and "Ericsson" completed a large joint project of the restoration of this unique structure, which began in 2000 under the leadership of Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology. Previous years 1976-1985 restoration works were stopped due to the termination of the project financing.
The most visible sign of the visitors to the new stage of the restoration was the entrance to the tunnel, which was discovered back in the previous work, but it was not until the end of the open and studied to date. It is assumed that the tunnel leads to the ancient tomb.
