Austrian Theater Museum in Lobkowicz Palace was established on the basis of the theater collection of the Austrian National Library in 1991.
The flowering of the popularity of Theatre Arts in Vienna came at the end 19 - the beginning of the 20th century. Citizens enjoy spending time on musical shows and theatrical premieres. Therefore, in 1921 it was decided to set up in the Austrian National Library collection dedicated to the theater. All the preparatory work takes Joseph Gregor, who was a famous theater-goer and a librarian.
A year later, in 1922, it was first discovered theater comedy show, which aroused great interest among the public. After receiving a lot of positive reviews, it was decided to buy back the director Hugo Simiga his private collection, which was the basis of the museum exhibition. In 1938, Stefan Zweig bequeathed his collection of autographs of prominent poets and playwrights of the museum.
After the approval of the Ministry of Education of Austria, the collection was called "Theatre Collection." Since then, the cultural circles have repeatedly raised talk of a separate museum, which would be entirely devoted to the theater. Finally, in 1975, the Austrian Theatre Museum was opened.
The museum is located in the Palace of Lobkowicz, who previously was the most important urban palace. The palace was built for Philip Sigmund von Dietrichstein after the second siege by the Turks in 1683.
Currently, the museum is more than 100 thousand. Of prints and drawings, about 600 different models of theatrical costumes, more than half a million valuable photos directors, actors and composers.
