St. Peter's Church is one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in the Austrian capital. The church was founded on the site of an ancient Christian temple in the year 792 by order of Emperor Charlemagne. The old church has not survived, so in its place has begun construction of a new church in 1701 under the leadership of Gabriele Montani, who was later replaced by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt. By 1722 most of the building was completed and in 1733 the church was opened. Construction of the church was begun by order of Leopold I.

Under the supervision of Hildebrandt it was built the church, which in appearance is very similar to the Church of St. Peter in Rome. The church is unusual both in its architecture (oval), and in colors: the dome is made in emerald green. Besides Lucas Hildebrandt worked on the construction of the Church of Andrea Altomonte, under whose leadership was erected portal extension. The building is in the Baroque style, which at this point looks very organic and solemnly.

The interior of the church was founded by Mathias Stein, frescoes painted by the famous Italian artist Andrea Pozzo. However, after the death of Pozzo in 1713 by Johann Michael Rottmaer she began to decorate the interior to your liking.

On the triumphal arch, you can see the coat of arms of Emperor Leopold I. The altar, made in Baroque style, was founded by Antonio Galli Bibieno and Martin Altomonte.

Over the years, the picture gradually darkened, and the interior began to get gray. From 1998 to 2004 the church conducted a complete renovation, which returned the paintings to their original appearance.
