Scottish Monastery - a Catholic monastery, located on the square in Vienna, Freyung. The monastery was founded in 1155 when Henry II moved the monks of the "Scottish" monastery in Regensburg. In fact, the Scottish monasteries are actually Irish. Just Irish monks were engaged in missionary work in Europe and Ireland in the medieval language was called "The Great Scotland."

In 1160, "Scots' church was built in the Romanesque style in Vienna, where he was later buried, Henry III. In addition to the church, the monks created a shelter for pilgrims and crusaders, who were sent to Jerusalem through Vienna. The church burned down in a fire in 1276. In 1418, Duke Albert captured the monastery and placed in the church of the Benedictines. Hence, the current name of the monastery.

In 1638 the church again caught fire due to a lightning strike. After the fire it was decided to restore the church, participated in the project architect Andrew d'Allio and S. Carlone. During this process, the length of the church was somewhat reduced as a result of which the tower is no longer directly next to the Basilica. A new altar was engaged Joachim von Zandrat. Previous Gothic altar with the image of Vienna survived. After the Turkish siege, the church was restored again. Since the beginning of 1700 as an organist in the church was Johann Fuchs.

In 1773, designed by architect Zaha Andreas house was built for the Priory and schools. The building is called "chest of drawers" because of its appearance. Directly located next to the hotel Römischer Kaiser, where the first public performance of Franz Schubert.

In 1880 the church was restored and partially reconstructed. During this period it was made by Julius Schmid painted ceiling and built a new altar according to the sketches of Heinrich von Ferstelya. Since 2005, the building of the monastery opened the exhibition.
