The history of Vienna Botanical Garden began in 1754, when Empress Maria Theresa founded the Apothecary Garden in Baroque style to the needs of the medical faculty, the students of medicine and botany can obtain information about the plants and their characteristics first hand. Designer Robert Laugier object shaped the landscape in a geometric order, putting first the plants, borrowed from the next, already developed the gardens, such as the Belvedere Palace. After that, the medical garden became rapidly develop and expand.

From the beginning of the 19th century Botanical Garden has been extended to nearly its current size - eight hectares of the territory have been built greenhouses for exotic plants from around the world. The Second World War seriously damaged as the Vienna itself, as the Botanical Garden. As a result, about 200 had to cut down trees, the majority of greenhouses in need of a complete restoration or partial restoration.

Currently, the Botanical Garden has an impressive collection of plants. Today you can see about 9000 species of plants. Garden works for visitors, and as a scientific laboratory, taking part in workshops. In addition, the scientific value of this garden is that it offers visitors the opportunity to explore nature in the "Green School". Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna provides new knowledge for doctors and botanists, or those who are simply interested in the study of little-known facts about the world of plants.

In the Botanical Garden are constantly held various exhibitions and seminars for professionals and for the general public.
