A visit to the National Museum of Sculpture is sure to leave an indelible impression on each of its visitors.

The museum was originally founded as the Museum of Fine Arts. This is one of the oldest museums in Spain - it opened in 1842. In 1933 the museum was renamed the National Museum of Sculpture. In July 2008, the museum was renamed the National Museum of San Gregorio, and in 2011 it returned to its original name by which he is known today.

The museum houses a vast collection of sculptures, ranging from 13 and ending with the 19th century. In total, there are slightly more than a thousand sculptures. It also exhibited a collection of paintings, there are about 1226 paintings, many of which can be called a truly priceless.

The museum exhibition presents sculptures made of stone, wood, metal and other materials. Most of the sculptures belongs to religious subjects. There is a magnificent retable altars and statues of saints and the whole sculptures depicting biblical scenes.

Today, the museum collections housed in various buildings, which can also be called, without exaggeration, a true work of art. This College of St. George, built between 1488 and 1496 years, whose facade is in the style of Elizabethan Gothic and Renaissance is a masterpiece of architecture. These are two magnificent mansion: Vilhena Palace and Casa del Sol, as well as the church of San Benito el Viejo, built in the 16th century.

Today the National Museum of Sculpture is one of the most original museums in Europe. Every year it is visited by thousands of tourists who come from different corners of our planet.
