Almost in the center of the Jewish Quarter of Toledo is a small, unpretentious and seemingly maloprimetnaya church of San Tome. Like many others, this church was rebuilt from the mosque after the liberation of the Arab conquerors of Toledo by King Alfonso VII. Built in the Mudejar style, the church of São Tomé is notable for its original, lined with brick bell tower, save the view of Muslim minarets.
The church has three naves in the plan, the transept crossing. Lovely church altar is Baroque and Plateresque. The main attraction of this church, to see that tourists come here, and art lovers from around the world, is placed in one of the chapels of the magnificent painting "The Burial of the Count of Orgaz", written by the hand of an outstanding artist El Greco. This masterpiece of world painting is one of the major works of the artist.
The canvas was written in 1576 specifically for the church of San Tome and never exported abroad. The plot for the film served as a legend of the burial of Don Gonzalo Ruiz de Toledo, Count Orgaz, St. Stephen and St. Augustine. The picture is notable for the fact that the painter in most of its characters portrayed his contemporaries. The image of the knight on the left side of the canvas shows the artist, and painted in the near Paget little we know of his ten year old son, Jorge Manuel, who looks out of his pocket handkerchief written on it the date of the birthday boy. On the other side of the picture is shown in the profile of the famous architect of the time Alonso Covarrubias.
