Phimai Khmer is an ancient city located in Thailand near the famous Angkor Wat. It is in consideration of the sheet to make it to the World Heritage List of UNESCO. The name "Phimai" translated from Khmer language means "big city." In ancient times it was on the way to the popular Angkor and is a constant point of visiting pilgrims.
The city was founded around the II century, after the capture of Khmer Thai state Dvaravati. Its territory is a rectangle, surrounded by a deep moat and high walls.
One of the greatest Khmer temples in Thailand is the temple of Phimai, it is assumed that such a name carried an important religious figure. Temple of impressive dimensions: its width is 565 meters, and the length of 1030 meters. In the southeast of the city is located Myung Brahmadat - a place where according to legend was buried the ashes of the Khmer king.
In the period from 1964 to 1969 in the historic town of restoration work carried out in cooperation with the Embassy of France, led by the Prince of Yaychay Chitrabongse and Bernard Philippe Groslier, is also involved in the restoration of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Through careful work scientists were able to preserve the ancient stucco depicting stories from the life of Buddha and scenes of the Ramayana.
