Murau - Austrian city, the capital of the district of the same name, located in Upper Styria. The area existed in the Bronze Ages, the territory of modern Murau Romans lived. The first documented mention of Murau is dated 1250 year, and 48 years later, in 1298 it became a town. In the 13-15 centuries in the Styrian authorities belonging to the genus of Liechtenstein, came from Lower Austria.

During the Second World War in Murau was a camp of the German army, and here held British prisoners of war. At the beginning of May 1945 a group of resistance fighters liberated the prisoners. The town was until 1955 in the British zone of occupation.

From the tourist point of view, the city is interesting for its medieval streets, beautiful churches and alpine scenery. Murau is famous for its quality and delicious breweries, as well as souvenirs.

The main attractions include: the castle with an interesting Murau knight's hall and a prison; Parish Church of St. Matthew, built in the early Gothic style in 1296; Anna Church, built in 1400. In addition, of great interest to tourists is the former gallows by the roadside on the rentiers, consisting of three stone pillars and bases. It should also visit the wonderful local history museum Murau.
