The old town of Rethymnon
   Photo: Old town of Rethymno

Rethymno was built by the Venetians in the XIII century. Save your oriental flavor: narrow streets with buildings of Venetian and Turkish buildings, thin spiers and minarets of mosques round towers; shops with handicrafts products, taverns, surrounded by warehouses of local wines, Rethymno at de time today - a modern city which offers all the benefits of civilization.

Above the town stands the fortress Fortezza, built in 1574. The fortress is well preserved only the external walls with four bastions. Next - a restored barracks, which now houses the Archaeological Museum of the city. The exposition of the museum make up the most valuable archaeological finds of the District and a rich collection of ancient coins.

The building of the XVI century loggia once gathered representatives of local Italian and Byzantine aristocracy to talk about politics, to conclude trade deals, to play cards. Next - a marble fountain Rimondi (1588), where the water flows from the lions' heads between four graceful half-columns with Corinthian capitals.
