The historic center of Bormio with its ancient palaces, towers, churches, chapels, paved streets, squares and fountains is a living reminder of the glorious past of the city, formerly an important trade center between Milan and northern alpine territories. Bormio - a popular ski resort, and its carefully restored historic center is partially converted into a pedestrian zone.
Most of the buildings dates back to the 15-16 th centuries - the heyday of Bormio, where were built impressive churches and palaces, the palazzo was decorated with frescoes and elegant stone portals. Then the noble merchant families were building the first high tower as a demonstration of his power.
Today, visitors can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the past, explore the ancient center of Bormio. It is best to begin your way on the Via Roma. At the beginning of the elegant streets, framed by palaces, is a beautiful Romanesque church of San Vitale with a wooden altarpiece of the 14th century. A little further on is visible Torre degli Alberti - one of the most prominent urban towers.
Via Roma leads to Piazza Cavour, better known as Piazza del Quercia - it has always been the center of social life in Bormio. Above the square stands the church of Santi Gervasio Collegiate e Protasio, planted in the 9th century, but completely rebuilt after a fire in the early 17th century. Inside the church contains several works of art, wooden sculptures of 16-17 centuries, the organ of the 17th century and the choir. And in the center of the square stands Quercia - medieval building with a portico, which once held a public hearing and to administer justice. Behind him is visible Torre delle Ore - Clock Tower. Today, the entire Piazza Cavour is dotted with shops, bars and restaurants. To the right of the collegiate church starts Via Morchelli that leads to the ancient customs building.
Antique Bridge Combo thrown over Frodolfo River, a tributary of the river Adda, leads to the old district of Combo, which is to explore the church of Santissima Krochifisso, restored in the 19th century and frescoes of 16-17 centuries, and the church with frescoes Sassello 15 century.
At the top of Bormio, in which you can get on the Via della Vittoria, Palazzo De Simoni is 17th-century medieval tower. In this building, which now houses the city hall and library, also operates interesting museum, which houses about 3 thousand historical artifacts. The museum's collections occupy two floors and are divided into two sections - section of art and history and ethnography section. Among the exhibits you can see works of art from local palaces and churches, for example, a fragment of the frescoes of the 11th century depicting Saint Cecilia, a huge altarpiece of the 17th century gilt wood and several paintings 19th-century works by Francesco Heise.
