Towering over the city snow-white peaks of Wat Mahathat can be seen several kilometers away. He is the central temple town of Phetchaburi and is at its heart.

The full name of the temple Wat Mahathat sounds like Voravihan or otherwise Phra Phrang iodine, which means "five sacred phrangov."
Phrangami called stupa in the form of corncobs, typical of the Khmer civilization and the early period of Thai history, copy their neighbors.

The basis Mahathat temple up white 55-meter phrangi, 4 of them are located around the main one. At the top of each phranga located Thayyani Buddha statue, which is a clear sign of Buddhism.

Wat Mahathat was subjected to several times of reconstruction because of the frequent destruction and mistakes during the construction period, to date virtually all of its parts are close copies of the original. The exact age of the temple is still not known, according to some estimates he is about 800-1000 years. In May 1954 Wat Mahathat visited the King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who invested in the central phrang ancient relics of the Buddha Gautama.

Also phrangov in the temple is something to see. The walls of the main room (viharn) decorated with more than a hundred skilled murals created by artists in the province over the past 200 years. On the territory of Wat Mahathat is also a two-story museum, where objects are stored for Buddhist ceremonies, a collection of ancient ceramics and works of art.

Every Sunday morning near the church are the lessons of classical Thai dance, even if you do not intend to learn, to admire the dancers would be very nice.
