Volcanology Museum, located in the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky - this is one of the main cultural attractions of the city. Founded in 1963, the Museum of Volcanology is the only museum of its kind in Russia. Originally the museum was a member of the Laboratory of active volcanism, but for quite a long time, its development no one did. In January 2005, the museum of volcanology has become a structural subdivision of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The main objective of the scientific and organizational activity of the museum - is the collection, classification, processing and storage of collections of unique pieces of volcanic, plutonic and post-volcanic rocks, diagrams, photos and videos about the expeditions and volcanic eruptions in order to study them. Visitors can see a variety of unique collections of samples of ore and minerals, as well as lava from the volcanoes of Kamchatka, the Kuril Islands, Italy, Japan, the USA, Mexico, Iceland and New Zealand. All specimens have been carefully studied minerals, allowing scripting their chemical composition.
Special attention at the museum visitors used by many fragments of cooled lava rocks with various inclusions, formed as a result of exposure to high temperatures and enormous pressure. The museum exhibition introduces visitors to the extinct and active volcanoes of Kamchatka Territory, mud pots, geysers, hot springs and fumaroles.
Science Museum of Volcanology works closely with the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, so the museum exhibits is constantly updated.
