Fountain "Neptune" is one of the fountains of the palace and park ensemble "Peterhof". In 1736, in the main basin of the Upper Park was placed sculptural fountain composition "Neptunian Cart". The sculptures were made of lead and finished with gold leaf. At the center of the composition was placed a figure of Neptune with a sidecar, and "riding" horses and dolphins. The gilded copper ball up the central jet fountain. After multiple restorations "Cart Neptunian" in 1797, still it has been removed. Instead, it has a new band - "Neptune", and continuing today.

The original fountain figures have been established in the German city of Nuremberg. In 1660, the sculptor Georg Schweiger and zolotokuznetsom Christoph Ritter was a model consisting only of long components. After Schweiger and his student Jeremiah Eisler worked on the model up to 1670, but the complete set of figures was performed only in the years 1688-1694. Castings engaged Heroldt. Fountain has never been exhibited in Nuremberg, but despite this, he became known as a specific landmark, even while on the stock.

In 1796, most of the pieces were acquired by Russia and transported in Peterhof. A copy of the installed now in Nuremberg city park, is located there since 1902.

The citizens of Nuremberg, ordering fountain, want to perpetuate the memory of the Peace of Westphalia, which was difficult for the completion of the German Thirty Years War, lasting from 1618 to 1648 years. The composition consists of 27 figures and decorative elements. On the area of the local market has been built a swimming pool with a pedestal for the installation of flow-group, when it became clear that for the fountains in urban rivers is simply not enough water. In this regard, the sculpture was dismantled and stacked in a barn. There they lay for about a century, while in the 80s of the XVIII century, traveling through Europe, Nuremberg has not visited the future Russian Emperor Paul. It was he who bought the composition, estimated by city authorities in a huge sum in those days - of 30 000 rubles.

Paul first thought to put a sculpture in his residence in Gatchina. But in 1798 it was decided: "Brought from Nuremberg fountain of Neptune put in the Peterhof Lower Park ...". But here, the installation of the fountain also failed due to insufficient water supply basin. Then I followed by another decree by which it was decided to place the sculptural composition in the Upper Park, in the pool, which was dismantled by "Carts Neptunian". This was done in 1799.

Water features "Neptune" accounted for 26 different water jets. From the former decorations fountains were left only two dolphins and lead garlands of oak leaves, flowers and shells.

The figure of Neptune can be seen in the middle of a large rectangular swimming pool whose dimensions 92h33 m, on a high pedestal of granite, decorated with 4 spouting mascarons. The flat area around the pedestal, laid tuff, bears the figure of paired groups of riders on the hippocampus (sea horse with wings) that urge on dolphins. Also pond decorated with figures of 8 dolphins from the mouths of which can be seen rising low trickle of water.

During the Great Patriotic War, all fountain sculptures were dismantled and sent to Germany. But soon, in 1947, the sculptural group was taken back to Peterhof and installed in the same place. However, running fountain "Neptune" was only in 1956.
