The first university in Pécs emerged in 1367 as one of the oldest in Central Europe of King Louis the Great, she went under during the Turkish occupation. In 1921 former Hungarian University in Bratislava (it. Bratislava, Hungarian: Pozsony) moved to Pécs, Janus Pannonius is rezultatom1982 University (Janus Pannonius Tudományegyetem, JPTE).
The first university was established in Pécs by Louis I of Hungary in 1367. Having existed as a unified educational center for several decades, in the middle of the 15th century it was divided into two schools - law and theology. During the Turkish occupation of the university was closed and opened only in 1785, when Joseph II moved the Royal Academy of Gyor, Pecs. In 1802, the Royal Academy came in Gyor on the orders of Francis I, and institutions of higher education in Pec was not until 1833, when the bishop of Pécs under the auspices of the city senate founded in Pec Academy with the faculties of law and philosophy.
Modern University of Pécs was founded in 1912 and originally located in Pozsony (now Bratislava). After World War Pozsony was aneksirovan from Hungary, and in 1921 moved to the University of Pecs, where it remains to this day. In 1951, the Medical Faculty of the University has been separated, and until 2000 was a separate institution. In 1982, the University was named after Janus Pannonius. This University of Pécs was established on 1 January 2000 through the merger of Janus Pannonius University, the University of Medicine and Teachers College.
