Myagao Church was built in 1797 by Spanish monks from the Order avgustiniantsev. Once it served as a fortress. In 1993, this amazing structure that mixes features of Aztec architecture and baroque, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The church, built of yellow limestone in the city of the same name in the province of Iloilo on Panay island, known for its intricately decorated facade and pyramidal bell towers. On the front facade, flanked by two watchtowers are located, you can see a striking blend of Spanish and Filipino motifs.

The main feature of the bas-relief of the facade is a huge coconut tree, stretching almost to the roof. The tree - an indispensable attribute of a typical Philippine landscape and the subject of many legends. According to an ancient Philippine legend, the coconut palm was the only subject inherited from the mother of her two children, namely palm helped them survive. On the facade of the church coconut palm is depicted in the form of "tree of life", which is based Saint Christopher carrying baby Jesus on his shoulders. On each side of the main entrance carved bas-reliefs of the Pope and St. Henry with their heraldic shields. On the other facade of the church depicts the daily life of the indigenous population over the past hundred years. Here you can see images of local flora and fauna, as well as folk costumes.

Church with watchtowers and served another important function - it serves to protect local residents from the raids of warlike tribe "Moro". That is why the walls of the church are thick - about 1, 5 meters, but somewhere under the ground, according to rumors, laid the secret passages. One of the watchtowers Bell - storey, the second - two-storey.

Church Myagao survived many natural disasters, destroys buildings around, but she could not stay away from the two bloody wars. It was burned twice - during the revolution against the Spanish colonizers in 1898 and during the occupation of the island of Panay Japanese in 1942-44 years. After the liberation of the island in 1945, the inhabitants of Panay collectively undertook the reconstruction of the temple.

Today the church Myagao deservedly considered one of the main architectural masterpieces of the Philippines, due to its unique and magnificent design, decorations and bas-reliefs.
