Constitution Square in Kharkov is one of the central and oldest squares. Date of its foundation - in 1659, at the same time, and was founded Kharkiv fortress. Since then, the area bore different names. Initially, it was called the fairgrounds, as performed here each year Assumption fair, the largest in the country. Later, when the area began to be built stone buildings on it was Nicholas Church, for which the area became known as the Nikolaev. With the advent of Soviet power, the area was named after the fighters for Soviet power MS Tevelev, a member of the underground organization in Kharkiv. So it was called until 1975. Then it was called Area of Soviet Ukraine, and since 1996 is the present name - Constitution Square.
With the advent of the area when it was not yet the buildings in the winter, it was a favorite place for sledding. But in the XIX century. the area began to be built the first stone houses. The first was the building of the Noble Assembly and police station (unfortunately, they have not survived). Opposite bank buildings were built, which is now the central savings bank, Puppet Theatre, House of Technology, Road Transport College. Then it was built the hotel "Metropol" and residential building, where today is the Palace of Labor. Two bank buildings, is now one of them placed the Faculty of Pedagogical Institute, another - regional branch of society "Knowledge". Next - House of mutual credit, is now the restaurant "Central".
As already mentioned, the square was still the church of St. Nicholas (Nicholas), but the laying of tram rails, the church was demolished. Now, under the square there are two metro station "Historical Museum" and "Soviet".
