Church of Our Lady of Mercy (La Merced) is located near the Plaza de Armas, in the historic center of Cuzco. Because of earthquakes occurred in this city, the Temple of Mercy was rebuilt and restored several times.

The first church was built in 1535 on land donated by the Marquis Francisco Pizarro. The present church replaced the first temple, which was destroyed in 1650 by an earthquake. The main entrance to the church, in the style of the Renaissance, is far less known than the side entrance, which is now used as a constant. Construction of a new church building was carried out in the period of 1651-1659 years the architect Martin de Torres, and Sebastian Martinez. The temple is in neoclassical style, decorated with columns, several side altars and the image of Our Lady of Mercy in the central part of the temple. Inside the tomb, which is located under the main altar of the church, are the remains of Gonzalo Pizarro, Francisco de Carvajal, Diego de Almagro the Elder (Pizarro's partner) and Almagro the Younger (son Diego).

The building of the monastery of Mercy Temple is considered a masterpiece. The whole structure of the building is made of stone. Its semicircular arches on small carved columns are repeated on the upper level, which only adds to the airy structure. For this reason, the monastery is credited with developing the project architect Torres, although some researchers are confident that the monastery was built by Diego Martinez de Oviedo, who belongs to the next generation of architects.

The building of the monastery is square with an arched entrance, a thick rectangular columns and numerous frescoes on the walls, illustrating the lives of the saints. In the center of the monastery is divided beautiful blooming garden. In the monastery museum is an exhibition of Mercy Temple.

The annual feast of Our Lady of Mercy, patron saint of the temple, celebrated September 24 beautiful procession in the streets of the city of Cusco.
