Cathedral of St. Erasmo - the main Roman Catholic church in the city of Gaeta. It was first built in the 7th century and then rebuilt several times - in the 10th, 17th and 18th centuries. In the 20th century, it was replaced by his facade.

The current neo-classical building - the result of reconstruction in the 18th century on the orders of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon. Facade of the cathedral was built in 1903 in neo-Gothic style, he is notable for a large portico crowned with a triple lancet window in the center. The pediment above the round window-rosette was made in the mid-20th century from the pale limestone tufa.

Inside the cathedral is made up of the central nave with side chapels and transepts, the altar space and the relief of the apse. Instead presbytery arranged wooden choir of the 16th century, resting on two marble columns. Also preserved are the original columns, medieval buildings. Under the altar is a crypt decorated in the 16-17 th centuries, colored marble and frescoes. You can get it from the two aisles by two large staircases. The interior of the cathedral is decorated with numerous works of art, for instance, Easter candles, decorated with carvings of the 13th century.

Cathedral of St. Erasmo is the place where in the 7th century, outside the city walls, was built the church of Santa Maria, which gave refuge fleeing from the shape of the bishops. In the 10th century, after the discovery of the relics of St. Erasmus, the church was expanded and took the deposit of the holy remains. In 1106, the year it was consecrated by Pope Pasquale II.

To the right of the cathedral rises the 57-meter bell tower in Arab-Norman style, built in the 12th century by architect Nicola D'Angelo. At the entrance it is possible to see the bas-relief depicting the sea monster swallowing biblical prophet Jonah. The foundation of the bell tower was built from fragments of ancient Roman monuments, including the mausoleum Atratiniya. An impressive staircase leads inside, where the Roman sarcophagi of the archeological zone Minturno. The bell tower, as well as much of the surrounding area, was seriously damaged during the Second World War, but was restored and has remained an important element of the urban landscape.
