According to ancient legend, the phenomenon of the Tikhvin Icon of Our Lady on the River Tikhvinka flowing through the territory of the Novgorod province, happened in this place in 1383. The history of the monastery was such that in 1590 it settled nun named Daria, who was the fourth wife of Ivan the Terrible. Her real name - Anna A. Kolotovskaya. As an infant, she was orphaned early and spent his childhood and youth at the court of Prince Kurbsky, where then was transferred to a marriage. As soon as the prince was not the favor in the king, Anna A. was not needed as the king, and he sent her to the convent. There Daria fully resigned to his fate and work for the good of the monastery, taking an active part in the process of recovery after the invasion of the Swedes.

Throughout 1613 the monastery was located in a military camp under the command SV Prozorovskiy, and after its capture by the Swedes gave the enemy a shelter here. In the fall of 14 to 17 September 1613 the Swedes began to sharply take positions and moved to the retreat, while having burnt down the monastery. Daria was Mother Superior at the time the head of all the nuns, who were hiding in the woods from the Swedes, waiting in the dugout. Some data tell that the stone cathedral in the monastery was built in the early 17th century, just after the Time of Troubles. Throughout 1645 when it appeared chapels St. Cyril and St. Nicholas.
