Wiang Kum Kam - an ancient settlement on the River Ping, which King Mengray built before the establishment of Chiang Mai is 3 km from the future capital of the Lanna Kingdom. According to ancient records, the city founded in the second half of the XIII century. Wiang Kum Kam was built as the capital after the victory of the king over the people of the neighboring Kingdom Haripunchay Mont.

Unfortunately, the place for the city was badly chosen, it is constantly flooded. Wiang Kum Kam was abandoned by people and about 700 years of it, no one remembered.

In 1984, the Department of Fine Arts discovered the remains of an ancient city near Wat Chang Kam and began excavations. As it turned out, it was found a forgotten and lost many centuries ago, the city of Wiang Kum Kam. Studies have shown that at this point there were ancient settlements since the VIII century.

The most well-preserved old town are temples of Wat Chedi Liem and Wat Chang Kam (aka Wat Kan Thom, the temple in honor of the author).

One of the most important surviving buildings is the chedi (stupa) in the style of the Kingdom Haripunchay created in 1286. At all levels there are niches with statues of the Buddha. It is a replica of the temple chedi Mahapol Chamadevi in ​​the city of Lamphun, which was the capital of the Kingdom of Haripunchay.
