Most of the Devil's cave

Most of the Devil's cave is located in the southern part of the tourist route of Sigulda, Turaida, Krimulda, on the slope of a 15-meter cliff. It is located about three kilometers from Sigulda Bridge, on the banks of the Gauja right inside the famous national park "Gauja". Most of the Devil's cave is a historical and natural monuments of Latvia and is subject to state protection.

The length of the Great Devil's cave is 35 meters, width - over 7 meters, and height - 5 meters. The cave entrance is 8 meters high. To go down to the cave and climb in it is strictly prohibited. But next to it is the suspension footbridge, from which it is perfectly visible. And on the opposite bank of the Gauja built a viewing platform from which you can also see the famous cave.

You can reach the cave on the walking trails, both on the right and on the left bank of the river Gauja. In the 90th years of XX century in the cave and around it were organized archaeological excavations, carried her out of accumulated leaves, twigs and debris.

There is a local legend tells that one night the devil stole from the village to the town Pabazhi Yudazhi. In some circumstances and reasons devil delayed in transit. When dawn came, and the first rooster announced the beginning of a new day, the devil is very frightened. He rushed to a nearby cave and hid it to the sun's rays do not destroy him. All day long he teased and frightened passers-by people and stinking breath characteristic puffed cave walls, which were black like soot.

They say that, supposedly Adam Jakubowski, who is the murderer of Turaida Rose, and his friend Peteris Skudritis deserted from the Polish army and hid it in the Great Devil's Cave. This legend, as well as many other legends of Latvia, captured and told the world Herman Berkowitz.

Interestingly, the cave with the same name in Latvia for at least three: Sigulda cave on the banks of the Gauja (in question), in Abava River Valley (near the complex «Plosti») and on the river Salaca near Mazsalaca.

And it is very easy to explain. In ancient times, people were convinced that the devil lives under the ground, and just outside is chosen through caves and grottos. There is another belief. For the pagan rituals always used the cave. Do not forget about dating, also held in these places. However, travelers are not always happy. It is worth remembering the sad story about Rose of Turaida.
