Boris and Gleb Cathedral was built by architect Grigory Borisov at the site of the same name of the church in the years 1522-1524 in the Moscow tradition. Temple - chetyrehstolpny, domed, with simple forms and clear, concise asymmetric silhouette, helmet-shaped dome and a slit-like windows.

Boris and Gleb Cathedral for 400 years of its existence repeatedly correspondence: in the XVII century, in 1783, 1842 and 1912. Each successive restoration did not spare the old layers of painting. She often brought down from the walls, preparing each time a new, more intimate and convenient ground.

In 1956, the architect BA Parsing later fired brick bookmark main altar niche was discovered a pattern of large stylized shoots on ocher background (the end of XVII century). In addition, the place where the monastery is located the tomb of the founders Theodore and Paul, fire found an interesting composition end of the XVII century. In the niche there is the image of the Savior Oglavnogo, patrons of the monastery of Boris and Gleb, and kneeling Theodore and Paul, and on the arch - father Boris and Gleb, Prince Vladimir the Saint, and Leonty of Rostov.

When the abbot Varlaam in 1783 the interior of the temple has been rewritten using glue paints, and in 1842 in the same style ponovlen second time. The last restoration of the cathedral was carried out in 1912 (the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty) under the leadership of the special commission, headed by NV Sultanov. Artist FE Team Yegorov painted temple of oil in the "Russian-Byzantine style." Many studies performed on drawings VM Vasnetsov.

Iconographic concept of painting should not be ancient canons. The painting shows a large composition, placed in a lavishly ornamented frames circles, crosses and stylized shoots, bright colors that used a lot of silver and gold.

The dome - "Almighty," in the spaces between the window openings of the drum - a mirror of the archangels 8, at the bottom of the drum - the 12 apostles in circles on the sails - evangelists. On the north wall at the top you can see the "Exaltation of the Cross" and "Vision of Jeremiah", at the bottom - "Sermon on the Mount."

In the semi-dome of the central altar of Christ is illustrated in the garb of a priest and 7 apocalyptic elders. "The Entombment" and "Resurrection" are located on the wall between the windows. Over the mining space - the 12 apostles and two angels with ripidami. In the arch of the main altar - "invisible eye". The conch dyakonnika - "Savior on ubrus" on the walls - Abraham, Ignatius, James and the other saints. In the conch of the altar depicts "Our Lady of the Sign" with the angels on the walls - the Metropolitan of Moscow, among which Alex, Peter, Philip, and others. On zaaltarnyh poles - 3 ecumenical prelate, Patriarch Juvenal, Nicholas, Cyril and Methodius, and Theodosius of Chernigov.

Gilded with pure gold iconostasis, which consists of 6 storeys, recreated in 1912 I. Zvonareva, has not been preserved.

In a corner of the temple set reliquary ancestors of Theodore and Paul Monastery. Its surface is silvered, decorated with characteristic patterns of the XVII century carpet of flowers carnations and bunches of grapes. On the side walls of the shrine can be seen 10 gilded medallions embossed circular shape on the 2-ones survived Chronicle, in which there are data indicating that cancer was performed under Patriarch Joseph.

From Rostov Cathedral of Sts originates unique monument of ancient sewing - "Banner Sapieha," dating from the beginning of the XVII century.
