Lake Orestiada, also known as Lake Kastoria, located in the northwestern part of Greece in Macedonia (District of Kastoria). In short, the peninsula jutting into the lake is the town of Kastoria. Probably the name "Orestiada" lake was from the mountain nymphs Orestiada, although there are other hypotheses.

The lake is located at an altitude of 630 meters above sea level. Its area is 28 square meters. km and a maximum depth - approximately 9-10 m. Lake Orestiada is of volcanic origin and age of the population of about 10 million years. It is believed that the current lake is only part of a huge prehistoric pond, whose area was 164 square meters. km.

Here, in 1992, it was found so-called "plate of Dispilio" - a wooden plaque with the signs, radiocarbon analysis which showed that her age is more than 7000 years. This suggests that the area near the lake was inhabited since ancient times. On the shore of Orestiada is an important local landmark - Mavriotisy Byzantine church, which dates back to the XI century and is an important monument of the Greek Orthodox Church.

Kastoria Lake is a very important ecosystem with rare ecological environment, is home to a lot of different living creatures, many of which are endangered. At the lake you can find about 200 species of birds - it swans, wild ducks, herons, gulls, storks, thrushes, ibises, cormorants, starlings, robins and even pink pelicans. The variety of fish, which is found in the lake (carp, carp, perch, roach, catfish, etc.) makes it a very popular activity such as fishing. Also in the lake inhabited by beavers and otters. You can find turtles, salamanders and snakes. The mountains surrounding the lake is home to wolves, foxes, bears, wild boars and other mammals. Very diverse flora and lakeside area. This diversity of flora and fauna is somewhat surprising, since the next is quite developed city.

Lake Orestiada - one of the most beautiful lakes in the Balkans and is classified by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Greece as a natural monument.
