Vidova Gora - the highest peak of Adriatic islands, its height is 778 meters above sea level. It was named in honor of St. Vida, the church of the saint once stood on top of a hill, and now on her left only ruins. They are located eighty meters from the eponymous restaurant "Vidova Gora" - can be seen from the terrace of the foundations of the north wall and part of the semi-circular apse.
The church was built in the 13th or 14th century, and in the stories about the island of Brac Vidova Gora is always mentioned. On it there were a lot of legends and tells fantastic stories related to the ancient Slavic god Svevidom. By the way, the names of many places on the island of Brac are Slavic origin.
Long before the arrival of the Slavs in the land of the Adriatic Sea, in the hills of Mount Species Illyrian residents built a fortified city. This is what built the Costa residents that settled for Ball. They were built of available material like a wall to protect themselves from enemies and cattle. The remains of these walls can still be seen today.
From the hill Species Mountains, where today are located the television antenna and a hotel with stone tables and benches, it offers stunning views of the southern lands. Far below the visible vineyards and green plain of Bol, that when the wind blows fluctuate exactly the golden leaf. For Hvar can see the narrow channel, which surrounds the fertile plains of the island and lies between the Old Town on the west side and Vrboska Jelsa on the east side, and ends with a long gravel strip.
On a clear day you can see Mount species other islands and mountains, which are located on the Peljesac peninsula, Korcula, Vis and Bisevo. If the day is cloudless, then it is possible to see the peaks of the Apennines. In memory of the war on the summit of Mount hoisted a huge stone cross. In the winter, Vidova Gora is often covered with snow so that the roads become impassable. When strong winds blow, that blow away the snow to the mountain, the inhabitants of the island there is the possibility to make walks and skiing.
