Bobruisk fortress - a monument of architecture of the XIX century. June 20, 1810 Emperor Alexander 1 signed a decree on the construction of the fortress and approved its plan. It was built under the direction of Karl Opperman - German nationality but Russian citizen.

Superbly designed plan of the fortress as possible take into account all the features of the landscape and even the old building. For example, when building was used by the former Jesuit church.

Bobruisk fortress played an important role in the defense of the Russian Empire. It was assumed that it would be a springboard for the collection of troops, in the case of the attack on the frontiers of Russia from the west. The fortress consisted of eight bastions accommodates 300 guns and more than 4 thousand soldiers.

The fortress was built across the country. Building materials supplied all Russian province. So, at the eastern gate of the fortress there is an inscription: "From the Caucasus ... delivered these things on the ground Belarusians. April 27, the day in 1811 "

Bobruisk fortress was built by the end of 1811. By the beginning of the war with Napoleon, she was almost ready. The fortress is not subjected to the French during the War of 1812. Construction continued after the war ended. In 1820 it was built Nagornoe strengthening, named after Emperor Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia Fort.

After the December uprising, Bobruisk fortress was the casemate. These exiled political prisoners, including the Decembrists, among them were V.Divov, M.Bodisko, S.Trusov, Vladimir Norov.

During World War II there was a large concentration camp. On the night of November 7, 1941 there were shot more than 7000 prisoners of war.

After the war, the fortress came into disrepair. In the early 50s, it was decided to demolish the Bobruisk fortress, but a solid wall, built of stone soundly withstood the dynamite explosions.

In 2002 Bobruisk fortress was included in the State Register of historical and cultural values ​​of the Republic of Belarus. Currently, there is a reconstruction of the fortress.
