On a high hill of Arzamas is its main decoration - Resurrection Cathedral. The majestic temple, surrounded by monasteries and churches, in clear weather is visible for tens of kilometers.
The grandiose cathedral was designed by the famous architect Mikhail Petrovich Corinth in honor of the victory of the Russian people against Napoleon in 1812. The temple was built entirely by donations from parishioners and construction are often suspended due to lack of funds and the city fire in 1823. Date bookmark building is 1814, and the completion of all work - in 1842. Cathedral in the classical style, in terms reminiscent of a Greek cross, placed on the square, stands the nearly fifty meters, and the width and length of the building over sixty meters. Interior decoration of the Cathedral of the Resurrection large murals done in black and white on biblical themes: "The phenomenon of the Holy Trinity," "Resurrection of Christ", "Intercession of the Theotokos" and "All Saint's Cathedral."
During the time of the destruction of the Resurrection Cathedral churches were blown up, but met fierce resistance from local residents, the church decided to simply close. One of the few survivors of the cathedrals in the Volga region in 1947 again began to hold services.
Today, a beautiful historical and architectural monument returned to the Nizhny Novgorod diocese, restored and is the main attraction of Arzamas.
