The upper church, which is called the parish church of Our Lady, located 600 meters from the Old Town Hall on the hill Kaulberge in Bamberg. The first mention of the parish dates back to the year 1140, but plans for the construction of a temple there appeared only at the end of the XIII century. Construction of the stone church began in 1338 and was consecrated in 1387.
The bell tower of the Upper Church has long been used as a watchtower. Given that the guard needed somewhere to spend the night in the period from 1537 by 1538 on this tower was built a special house to stay. It became pretty much stands out for its appearance of a common Gothic style. Despite this, the tower has become the architectural symbol of Bamberg.
One of the memorable sights of Upper Parish Church is considered "real bride," which is a wedding gates in them should be part of the bride. Before the gate was the place where the priest blesses the intending spouses. This portal is decorated with sculptures that display of the Bible parable of the ten virgins at the gates of paradise. And in the central part of the arch shows the Coronation of the Virgin.
In the XVIII century the interior of the church was restored in the Baroque style, its columns adorned figures of the apostles. In addition to the main altar in the temple built six more altars, as earlier the church took a fairly large number of pilgrims. Near the premises communion can see Gothic image of Anne - the mother of the Virgin Mary. Visitors can see a picture in the side nave, whose author is the Venetian painter Tintoretto, it depicts the ascension of Mary.
Currently, Upper Church is the main church of the Catholic community of the city.
