In the Middle Ages was the capital city of Annecy, Geneva County, and stands in the center of Annecy, the castle was the seat of the Counts of Geneva. The castle was built in the XII century on the site of the fortress, built four centuries earlier. In the XIII century it became the residence of the members of the Count's family, later moved to the Duke of Savoy.

In the Middle Ages the castle several times destroyed by fires, but each time was reduced, more and more strengthening his defense. However, despite the thickness of the walls, menacing look and a prime location on top of a hill, in the first half of the XVII century, the castle was taken by the French army. In XVII century, the castle houses the barracks and warehouse, one time he even served as a refuge for the homeless. Only in the middle of the XX century, the building was declared a historical monument, and now it housed a museum where you can see works of art and objects from different eras.

One of the famous inhabitants of the castle was Robert of Geneva - begetteth here in 1342, the son of Count Amadeus III. Robert of Geneva is also known by the name of anti-pope Clement VII - pretty militant and cruel, nicknamed the butcher and executioner for his methods of dealing with the rebels. In the second half of the XIV century in the Catholic world had two dads - one officially elected Urban VI and the second elected cardinal's "opposition" Clement VII, who had hoped to take power and overthrow Rome Urban VI. Having failed, Antipope Clement settled in Avignon, which once housed the papal residence.

After the death of Clement VII in 1394 it was merged with Annecy and Savoy lost its status as capital of the county, and the county of Geneva, too, was gone. Due to the Duke of Savoy castle gained its most beautiful tower Perrer.

Today the castle is surrounded by beautiful public gardens and other historical attractions. With its walls seen the city and Lake Annecy.
