Elblag Canal - Ship Canal near the town of Elblag, which connects Lake City Ostróda and Iława with Vistula Lagoon. Elblag Canal is the longest in Poland, its length is 84 km 2. The channel is located within the region of Warmia-Mazury. In January 2011, the President of Poland declared a historical monument of the channel, and in 2007 he was recognized as one of the seven wonders of Poland.

The most amazing part of the channel is a land length of 9, 6 km with a height difference of 100 meters. There are five special lifts that carry the court on the ground. Channel is able to pass ships with deadweight up to 50 tons.

The project to construct a navigation channel was created in 1825 as an engineer from Prussia Jakub Steenke. The famous engineer who worked at the court of Frederick I and Frederick II, found a way to solve the problem of the strong level difference in the canal. Invented project Elbląg Canal was to connect East Prussia with the Baltic for trade and economic purposes.

Steenke could not get financing for nearly 20 years. By implementing only started in 1848. The first work was done with lakes, where gateways and built mounds to lower the water level. The work was done painstaking, requiring time and perseverance. Elblag Canal was completely finished in 1860. The construction of the channel cost 10% more expensive than the construction of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The project has been estimated at 77 tons of gold.

During the Second World War, the canal was destroyed, but two years after the end of hostilities here again opened shipping. Currently Elblag channel is only used for tourism purposes.
