Church of St. Dionysius - one of the most impressive buildings of the picturesque Greek island of Zakynthos. The temple is located on the waterfront of the city of Zakynthos (Zante), and its imposing bell tower - the first thing that visitors see the island, arriving at the port of Zakynthos. The temple got its name in honor of St. Dionysius - the patron saint, as well as one of the most venerated saints of the island of Zakynthos. St. Dionysius (in the world Draganigos Siguros) was born on the island of Zakynthos in 1547 in the family belonging to a noble Venetian old, and had a reputation for a highly educated man. In 1568 he became a monk, and two years later was ordained a priest. In 1577 he became Archbishop of Aegina and Poros, but soon abandoned the dignity and returned to his homeland as an abbot. After the intrigues of enemies and slander was reduced to the status of a simple village priest, which, however, did not prevent him win the love and great respect for the residents of Zakynthos. The last years of his life spent in St. Dionysius Anafonitriyas monastery, where he rested, December 17, 1622. In 1703, St. Dionysius was canonized Patriarch of Constantinople.
Church of St. Dionysius is the main temple of the island and an impressive luxury interiors - excellent wall paintings and stunning icons, among them works by such famous Greek painters like Doksaras and Kutuzis. The main relic of the temple are the relics of St. Dionysius, stored in a carved silver ark.
Twice a year, on August 24, and December 17, residents of Zakynthos in a big celebrate St. Dionysius. After the Divine Liturgy, the clergy, accompanied by a solemn procession make the procession with the relics of the saint. These days, the island attracts numerous pilgrims who wish to honor the memory of St. Dionysius and to venerate the holy relics.
