Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, or, as it is called Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk cathedral, is one of the iconic sights of the city. The temple was consecrated in honor of the Resurrection of Christ is located on the Boulevard St. Innocent, which is located at the intersection of the Komsomol and the Communist Avenue.
Location for the construction of the cathedral was consecrated by Metropolitan Pitirim (Nechaev), who visited the city in August 1990. However, the construction of the temple began only in 1992, as the funds for its construction lacked. The construction of the cathedral was completed in 1995 The authors of the project of the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ made by the architect and designer Michenko S. L. Sivkova.
A small domed temple was built in accordance with the traditions of ancient architecture of the Novgorod school. On the territory of the cathedral was built tower, belfry. Specially cast for the tower bell weighs one ton. On it you can see a picture of St. Innocent of Moscow, who was also an educator of America and the Far East. In the same cathedral has a lower church, which was consecrated in the name of the Resurrection.
Over time, it became clear that the cathedral, for up to 450 people, could not accommodate all the parishioners. Therefore, in 2002, it began its reconstruction. On the eastern side of the temple opposite the bell tower was built with an elegant dome, which represented an octagonal tent, crowned by a small helmet-shaped cupola.
Bell Tower and the Church joined the ceiling, through which the church space was greatly expanded. As a result of the restoration of the building of the cathedral has changed its silhouette. Now the temple is similar to the white ship with delicate blue sails.
