At 40 kilometers from the city of Volgograd, on the banks of the Volga River are the remains of a ruined medieval town. It is a known archaeological site - Vodyanskoe settlement.
Scientists who have studied the ancient chronicles suggest that this settlement was in the heyday of the Golden Horde in the original sources mentioned under the name Bezdezh or Beldzhamen. Earlier Beldzhamen was mentioned in the writings of the Arab traveler Abufeldy - in the XIII century.
During the archaeological excavations from 1967 to 1974, researchers discovered the remains of a mosque near - Muslim cemetery. Among the ruins of houses were and structure with the characteristics of a public bath. In addition, the objects have been found, archaeologists have suggested that examining that existed near Beldzhamenom Russian settlement. Probably, hence, the second Russian title Bezdezh. By the way, Beldzhamen translates as "the city of oaks". And, apparently, it is not accidental in the XVII century there was a settlement next to the name Dubovka. The debate about whether the legendary Beldzhamenom Vodyanskoe mound, underway until now. Undoubtedly only that an open archaeological site has obvious signs of the culture of the Golden Horde.
The current state of settlement alarming and concerns of the scientific community. There is a danger of slipping a significant part of the object into the Volga. There are clear signs of the barbaric activities "black diggers" - lots of broken pottery fragments and human remains, the remains of ancient bricks. However, Vodyanskoe settlement entered in the register of monuments of federal significance and should accordingly protected status. It seems that Tamerlane destroyed the city in the XIV century, was a civilized our contemporaries.
