Verona's Cathedral - one of the main churches of the city, the location of episcopal. Construction of the Romanesque temple began in the second half of the 12th century - it was built on the site of two pre-Christian church destroyed during an earthquake in 1117. Already in 1187 a new cathedral was consecrated. In the 15th century to it we added some extensions and expanded, giving the building late Gothic features. From the original image are preserved only entrance portal with a portico, decorated with winged griffins - tvroenie architect Nicholas. Incidentally, the same architect was the author of the entrance portal of the Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore, dedicated to the patron saint Zeno of Verona, and Ferrara Cathedral.

Above the entrance to the cathedral you can see the relief image of the Blessed Virgin Mary holding Baby Jesus in her arms. In addition, the portal is decorated with scenes from the Old Testament and the figures of two knights of the medieval epic - Roland and Olivier. It also housed the image of ten prophets, evangelists and the four symbols of the Lord's hands. Gothic facade windows serve as a reminder of the restoration of the cathedral in the 14th century. But elements of the Baroque style in the upper part of the facade were added here in the 17th century. The bell tower, the construction of which began Michele San Michele in the 16th century and remained unfinished - it is notable columns with richly decorated capitals, reliefs and frescoes of the 14th century.

The interior of the cathedral is Gothic - red marble columns, arches, vaults with gold stars on a blue background. Over the decoration of the side altars and chapels in the 16th century work by Giovanni Falconetti. Here you can see works of art: "The Entombment" Nicolo Dzholfino, "Assumption of the Virgin Mary" by Titian and the "Adoration of the Magi" Liberale da Verona.

Next to the cathedral is the cloister, also made in the Romanesque style. It is framed by a two-level cloister red marble. From here you can get in the Chapter of the library - manuscripts of the church vault and the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte was built in 1123. The baptistery frescoes and paintings of 13-15 centuries, and in the central nave is a font, carved from a single marble in the 12th century.
