Lake Ioannina, known as well as Pamvotida or Pamvotis - the lake in northern Greece (Ioannina prefecture). It is the largest lake in the region of Epirus. Along the northern shore of the lake runs the Greek National Road, connecting the city of Igoumenitsa and Volos.

The lake is located south of the mountain at an altitude of Mitsikeli 470 meters above sea level. The lake is about 19, 4 sq. a., the average depth - 4, 5 m (maximum 11 m), and its maximum length and width of 7, 9, 5, 4 kms respectively. The lake is fed by several small streams. It has no surface runoff, but by sinkholes is drained into rivers arachthos, Luros and Kalamas.

On the shores of the lake lie the capital of Epirus - Ioannina and the small town of Perama, and the remaining area is occupied by farmland. You should definitely visit the located near the north shore of Lake Ioannina small picturesque island, where the legendary Ali Pasha Tepelensky (Ioannina) hides in the last days of his reign, and was killed. On the island you will find a small picturesque village with narrow cobbled streets, traditional houses, cozy restaurants and cafes, and ancient monasteries, among which is the Monastery of the Prophet Elijah, located at the highest point of the island, offering stunning panoramic views. It is worth visiting and entertaining museum of Ali Pasha.

In recent years, urbanization and pollution adversely affect the ecosystem of the lake, which is home to small mammals, waterfowl, and various species of fish and crustaceans. During the summer, as a result of eutrophication marked intensive growth and algae blooms, which in turn can lead to a deficiency of oxygen, suffocation of fish and animals.
