Castle of St. Peter's, built on the hill of San Pietro in Verona - a fortress, standing on the site of an ancient Roman temple. Place for the construction of the castle was not chosen by accident - a scenic hill, overlooking the River Adige and the whole city, it is the ideal strategic point. Already in the Iron Age people lived here, which is confirmed by archaeological excavations. In the era of ancient Rome at the foot of the hill it was built the first fortified structure with which controlled the crossing of the Adige, and a little later on the opposite bank of the river there was the city, which later became Verona. It is believed that the church dedicated to St. Peter, was built here in the 8th century, stood on the site of an ancient Roman temple, the ruins of which can be seen until the beginning of the 19th century.
In the era of the rule of the Venetian Republic the Castle of San Pietro, with its internal structure has been the residence of the military commander of the city. Major restoration works were carried out in the early 17th century, in particular, have been renovated facilities for the soldiers, and in 1703 was expanded infantry barracks - they can accommodate up to 460 people. Unfortunately, when in the early 19th century, the power of the city was in the hands of Napoleon, his army destroyed much of the castle and the church and the watchtower, the remains of which can be seen today at the walls.
Between the years 1858 and 1852 on the orders of the Austrian Field Marshal Josef Radetzky in the castle were built barracks that exist to this day, and bearing the obvious features of German architecture.
The wall surrounding the castle of San Pietro, because of the topography has an irregular elongated shape: the western and southern sides, it is straight, and the east - the broken line. Originally, the wall was reinforced by 12 towers - can be seen on the stonework. Inside the northeast corner stood the tallest tower, now destroyed. Two gates equipped with drawbridges, located on the east and south sides. It has survived a huge tank built in the 16th century and established underground water for the soldiers - it was moved here from the destroyed church of San Pietro French.
In general, the Castle of San Pietro, in spite of many years of neglect, well preserved: the inhabitants of Verona and many tourists like to visit the small square in front of the castle and its surroundings turned into a public park. In the 1920s, there was even built funicular climbs wishing the hill, but for many years he did not act. Today, the walls of the castle itself held extensive restoration work, after which there will be open a new museum.
