Mount Apo - a potentially active volcano on the island of Mindanao, 40 km north-east from the city of Davao. The word "apo" in the local language means "ancestor." It is the highest point of the island and across the country - 2954 meters. Geologically, the volcano is from the ancient crater Petty McKinley and young stratovolcano Apo. In its crater with a diameter of 500 meters is a small lake. Latest eruption of Apo unknown.
Today the volcano is one of the most popular among climbers - the easiest way to the top takes about two days, the most difficult - from 7 to 9 days. But Apo was the first conqueror of Joaquin Rahal, the Spanish governor of Davao, who ascended the mountain October 10, 1880. On the way to the top of the tourists pass by Lake Venado - one of the highest lakes in the country, the ancient crater and solfataras - fumaroles from which sulfur gases are pulled out.
The whole mountain is included in the National Park, Mount Apo, where an area of 55 thousand hectares can be found evergreen dipterocarp forests with rare and endemic species of plants. The park was created in 1936, and in 2004 it included two buffer zone area of 2, 5 and 6, 5000 ha. In 2009, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources of the Philippines filed an application for inclusion of Park Mount Apo in the list of World Natural Heritage by UNESCO as a center of endemism in Mindanao. In the park there are three typical forest formations - floodplain tropical rain forest, the forest midland and highland forest, each of which differs in species composition. Alone bird in Mount Apo inhabits 272 species, of which 111 species are endemic. Here you can find the world's largest eagle - Philippines, which is considered a national symbol of the Philippines.
