State Museum of Art of Novgorod land was founded in 2002 in Veliky Novgorod. Museum is located in the territory of the Tithes Monastery, which is a monument of architecture of the XIV century. In 1170 this place during the famous Battle of Novgorod and Suzdal, has taken out the miraculous icon of "The Omen", according to legend, saved the Novgorod. The date of establishment of the monastery is 1327.

In 1994 it created regional training center of artistic creativity. In spring 2002, the center receives the status of the State Museum. The founder of the museum is Gavrilova Galina, which became its first director. From 1994 to 2002, the Center held a huge artistic and practical organizational work on the discovery of talented craftsmen and artists with all kinds of art enthusiasts in the Novgorod region and attracting skilled craftsmen to exhibition activities. The level of exposure meets the high requirements of the museum world and traditions.

The museum presents the work of professionals widely arts and crafts and Novgorod painters of late XIX - early XXI centuries. Each of them features a unique style, its own special way of working. The works and the creation of fine art executed in different techniques: drawing (pastel, watercolor, pencil drawing, linocut, etching, etc.), painting. The works created by talented craftsmen of Novgorod, participants and winners of international contests and exhibitions, folk and Honoured Artist of Russia. It draws attention to arts and crafts. The museum contains about 5000 exhibits, including: painting, drawing, medal art, sculpture, porcelain, glass. There are also personal archives of authors, which shows: the documents and public service activity, creative materials, biographical documents, correspondence, photographs.

Extraordinary exhibit of the museum is the church of the Assumption, which is on Volotovo field, near Veliky Novgorod. First Novgorod Chronicle says that the church was built by the order of Archbishop Moses in 1352. Ten years later the temple painted. The church walls were decorated with nearly 200 songs. During World War II the church was destroyed. Preserved the outlines of walls and columns from two to four meters high. Russia and Germany in 2001, signed the Agreement on the provision of grant aid in the reconstruction of the temple and its murals. The restoration of a rare monument was conducted in 2001-2003. On the walls were preserved sites of ancient painting.
