Also, a number of features making it very important from a historical point of view.

The town was first mentioned in the 10th century, but the exact time of its foundation has not yet been determined. At various times, the owners of the town were the Venetians and the Croat-Hungarian kings, all this affected the culture of the city and, of course, on his appearance. The best examples of architecture of the Old City were built in 15-16 centuries in the typical Renaissance style of those times. No wonder that in the 15th century on Korcula spoken of as "the pearl of architectural art", and in the 17th century one of Korcula Croatian poets called "decoration of the world."

Interestingly, according to the idea of the first architects of the total composition of the city was supposed to resemble the shape of a fish skeleton. According to the city planning idea and build houses, alleys, palaces and churches. Also this idea correspond to elements of architectural decoration, door frames, window sills, balconies, cornices, facades, etc.

During World War II, the Old Town miraculously survived, although it is in its territory then settled by Italian and German troops, and heavy fighting took place. The occupiers were driven from the island in 1943 by local guerrillas.
