Cathedral of the Cathedral of San Sebastian, built in the years 1876-1885, is now one of the most beautiful churches in the city and around Bacolod Negros Island. Despite the fact that the parish in Bacolod was founded in 1788, a long time in the city did not have a permanent priest and prayer of the church. Believers attend a small wooden chapel built of bamboo and NPCs.
In 1817 he was appointed parish priest father Julian Gonzaga, who built a small church made of wood with a metal roof just west of where today stands the cathedral. He began in 1825 to collect corals from the bottom of Guimaras Strait to build a stone church. Unfortunately, Gonzaga was not meant to wait for the execution of his dreams - he died in 1836.
Only in 1876, construction began on a stone church in Bacolod under the direction of Mauricio Ferrero priest of the Augustinian Order Rekollektov. Interestingly, Ferrero was the architect not only the future of the cathedral and the residence of the priest, but also the city jail - in exchange for this service, the provincial governor ordered to send some prisoners to build a new church. In 1882, the solemn consecration of the church, but the twin bell towers were completed only in 1885. They have given the church a typical West-European views. That same year, the local patron of the arts Jose Ruiz de Luzuryaga presented huge clock for the right bell tower was completed choirs and the organ. In 1932, the church received the status of a cathedral, as in Bacolod diocese was created.
Later, in 1969, the cathedral had to carry out restoration work: worn-out old bell tower began to be dangerous and have been replaced with concrete, were also removed a silver altar and a painting on the ceiling.
Inside the cathedral is a portico consisting of three arches of equal size. On the side of the main entrance was placed a statue of the builder of the church father Ferrero. The interior of the cathedral is quite simple, if not strict, but very pleasant. And the beauty is not so much create ornaments and decorations as modulation of arches and columns. In the courtyard of the cathedral you can see the bell, which in 1976 was removed from the Belfry. And nearby is the monastery, built in the late 19th century from coral stones. Today, it is located in the residence of the bishop.
