Palazzo Ducale, built in Renaissance style in the second half of the 15th century, after the accession of Gubbio Federico da Montefeltro, - a visual representation of lifestyle inspired by humanistic ideals. The project of the palace architect Laurana worked - work lasted from 1467 for 1472 years. And after 1474, when Federico de Montefeltro was proclaimed Duke, in some parts of the Palazzo were his initials - FD (Federicus Dux), which can be seen today. It is also believed that the erection of the palace could work of Francesco di Giorgio Martini from Siena, another architect in the service of Montefeltro.

Of particular interest in terms of architecture is a patio with an arched portico of the Palazzo, which resembles, albeit on a smaller scale, the palaces and courtyards of Urbino. Floor above the portico is decorated with elegant windows with architrave, separated by pilasters.

No doubt, after the construction of the Palazzo Ducale hit its interiors and decorations. For example, a study of the Duke, now exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, was made from wooden panels covered with mosaic to a height of 2, 68 meters. In addition to our days perfectly preserved wonderful inlay on the doors, square ceiling Floor, marble fireplaces and tiled roof. They deserve attention and walls, once located on the site of the Palazzo, including the building of the old City Hall, and surviving - they can be seen from the other side of the palace, which faces the valley.

Today in the Palazzo Ducale, standing right in front of the Cathedral of Gubbio, is a museum in which the exhibits belonging to the Italian agency for architectural and archeological heritage.
