Church of St. Ruprecht is the oldest church of Vienna. According to legend, it was built by order of Bishop Virgil in the VIII century on the site of the catacomb chapel. Its foundation used gray stone buildings of the Roman military camp.
The nave and the base of the tower date back to the IX century, but the church was reconstructed several times. The church survived the XIII century stained glass depicting the Crucifixion of Christ and the Virgin Mary on the throne. Also preserved the miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary (the so-called "Black Madonna"), which, according to legend, preached before the Turkish invasion and the plague.
