Maria am Gestade - Catholic church located in the hinterland of Vienna, built in the Gothic style. The church is one of the oldest buildings in the Gothic style in Vienna. The name of the church in German means "Mary on the shore." The church got its name because it was built on the banks of the Danube, which is currently called Donaukanalom.
It is known that this place was a wooden church in the 9th century, which served as a place of worship for fishermen and sailors. Church of Maria am Gestade first mentioned in documents in 1158. The current building was built between the years 1414 and 1394 in the Gothic style, and in 1409, the church became part of the Diocese of Passau.
Church of Maria am Gestade used as a warehouse and stables in 1809 during the Napoleonic Wars. Only 3 years later, in 1812, the church was repaired and re-consecrated. After these events, the church moved the Redemptorist Order, which is in the possession and now. Since 1862 the church is the remains of St. Clemens Hofbauer, who is the patron of the Austrian capital.
The most striking feature of the church is 56 meters high tower, built in 1419-1428, respectively. The tower is recognizable from a distance. The windows of the tower contain fragments of medieval stained glass.
