Assumption Cathedral

Assumption Cathedral is the cathedral Orthodox cathedral city of Varna. Located in the heart of the city, on the area of ​​St. Cyril and Methodius. The construction of the temple was started in 1880 on the initiative of the Bulgarian Tsar Alexander I Battenberg. In memory of the Empress Maria Alexandrovna of the Russian Empire, the wife of Alexander II, which accounted for governor aunt, the church was consecrated in the name of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin.

The foundation of the church was created by the architect from Odessa Maas, and on the creation of the building bothered Varna architect P. Kupka. Financing of the construction was carried out mainly by private donations, but also to raise money for a lottery was held, during which the organizers have sold about one hundred and fifty thousand tickets cost two leva each. To complete the construction in October 1885. By 1949, on the walls of the temple there was painting, and in the 60s in the large windows overlooking the square, stained-glass windows were inserted. At the end of XX - beginning of XXI century in the cathedral we had a restoration of frescoes, mounted ventilation system, updated coverage domes and roof, as well as established a unique system of exterior lighting of the building, designed to effectively enhance the beauty of its architecture in the evening.

Cathedral of the Assumption, many considered one of the symbols of Varna, and with its high bell tower offers excellent views of the entire city.
