Monument destroyer "Kerch" is located on the waterfront of the city of Tuapse and represents a huge block of sandstone, resembling the outline of the bow with attached admiralty anchor. The monument was erected in 1968, on the fiftieth anniversary of the tragic events that occurred in the hard times.
In the spring of 1918 against the army of the Entente captured Odessa, Nikolayev and Perekop - a real threat of a full occupation of the Crimea. People's Commissars, headed by Lenin decided to withdraw all the Black Sea Fleet, based in Sevastopol to Novorossiisk, to avoid capture by the Germans ships. A total of Novorossiysk was ferried twelve destroyers, ten boats and eight conveyors, two battleships and five destroyers. In response, the Germans violating the Brest-Litovsk Treaty, occupied Sevastopol and issued an ultimatum to the Soviet leadership with the requirement for six days to return the fleet in Sevastopol. As the Red Army at that time did not have enough strength to resist, it was decided to flood the whole fleet.
June 17, 1918 the decision was enforced, and the fatal role played in these events is the destroyer "Kerch". The decision to flood the fleet caused a storm of protests among the population and the sailors themselves. Only an ardent supporter of flooding fleet commander turned destroyer "Kerch" - VA Kukel, who took over the execution of the order. At dawn on June 19 not far from Tuapse was flooded and the destroyer "Kerch".
It is worth noting that part of the fleet still managed to rescue and ferry ships in Tsaritsyn where on this basis has been created Volzhno Caspian Flotilla.
