On the northwest coast of the island of Santorini (Thira) in the town of Oia is interesting Naval Museum, which was founded in 1956 on the initiative of the Greek merchant navy captain Antonias Dakaroniasa. Since 1990, the museum is located in an old mansion of the 19th century, which formerly belonged to the family of Beerbohm. This architectural structure has been specially restored (after the earthquake in 1956) and converted into a museum.
The museum exhibition perfectly illustrates the history and maritime tradition of the island. The peak of economic prosperity has reached the island in the late 19th - early 20th century thanks to its fleet and good trade relations in the Mediterranean, as well as trade with Russia.
The museum exposition is very diverse and entertaining. The collection includes models of ancient and modern ships, nautical instruments and gear, old maritime equipment and fragments of vessels, naval uniform, sketches and paintings on the theme of the sea, compasses, drawings and more. The museum also presents portraits and personal belongings of famous local sailors. A special place in the museum holds a great collection of photos, among which there are pictures depicting the ships' crews, students in marine uniforms, ceremonies launching new ships, the construction of shipyards, as well as the landscape of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Maritime Museum has its own library, which contains important historical documents, logbooks, charts and specialized literature. The museum's collection is constantly expanding.
The main purpose of the museum is to promote maritime history and traditions of Greece in general and in particular the island of Santorini.
